Dear Gent,
In connexion with the new immigration bill which has been under consideration in Hong Kong, I should mention that at a recent interview with Mr. Butler the Chinese Ambassador mentioned as one of the reasons against the bill the importance which the Chinese Government attached to the training of young Chinese at Hong Kong University and asked that we should express to you the hope that you would continue to maintain an interest in the growth of the University.
I believe that the British Council have in recent years taken a good deal of interest in the University. though in present circumstances it is difficult to offer much help. In any case I presume that the recent proposals for the restriction of immigration will in no way interfere with bona fide students from China coming to Hong Kong to attend the University.
Yours sincerely,
fahly Clarka!
